This is hard and tough roots music with plenty of soul, grit, and sweat, as well as artistic prowess in the solos and arrangements. John Hammond himself produced the vast majority of these cuts, and Skippy Martin arranged them. Basie was a bandleader of killer instinct and an ear for both his musicians' strengths and his audience's fickle heart.
This is an excellent collection for anyone interested in checking out why Basie remains one of the giants. Highly recommended.

Ella sings only one song, the first track, as a duet with the fabulous Joe Williams. For me, that made the entire CD worth every penny. Plus you get seven more vocals from Joe and the Count's amazing mids band on all 13 tracks.
One of the true heroes of the record business, Verve founder Norman Granz, produced the original recordings. I am delighted with this CD and so glad I purchased it. There are three bonus tracks, two of which were never issued in any format, and one from a long-out-of-print EP. The gatefold cover reproduces the original LP's front and back, complete with liner notes by no less than leading critic and great citizen of jazz, Nat Hentoff; Verve thoughtfully reprinted these notes in normal-size type on an insert.
Maybe Universal will see fit to reissue this package, but in the meantime, I'm so glad to have found a new-in-shrinkwrap copy from an Amazon seller. To quote one of the tracks, I'm "Smack Dab in the Middle" of musical joy! A ggod romp by Basie, Williams and Fitzgerald is guaranteed here. One O'Clock Ju,mp as expected just cooks and every selection here really makes for a good jazz night. This one was hard to find in its day when new. CD remastering brings it back to its as these artists intended and still makes a great hour of jazz for good listening.
One person found this helpful. While the Basie band crackles as always, Joe Williams' sometimes cringe-worthy crooning knocks these sessions down a couple notches.
