The Grateful Dead - Anthem To Beauty (Classic Album) (34) 60min 13+ Documentary about the making of two Grateful Dead albums: 's "Anthem of the Sun" and 's "American Beauty".
My search to find the true venue for a mis-marked show led me to your blog. I have a tape marked Haight St. However all I can turn up is that this show was only recorded by an audience member and the set list is incomplete, the "known" set list is not what I have on the tape. I cannot find a set list for the track order on the tape I have. The sound is crips, they are totally rocking, a very high energy show and the Cryptical-Other One is mindblowing and the center piece of the show.
I have this on a 45 min. Last song is Death, and the tape starts with the drums banging the opening note for Good Lovin' Because this show is a wall of rolling thunder, I started to try and find out more, and it led me realize that based on current knowledge it is not as it is marked "Haight St.
I don't know the lineage, I just ended up with it after college 20 years ago. If you can help me in the quest to find out the real date of the show I would appreciate it. Kyle Bairnsfather kyle bairnsfather. That's a tricky tape, actually, since it's not from an actual show. Sorry to say, lots of tapes were compiled from various shows and given totally random dates In this case, unless you have timings for the other songs, I can't name a particular date for those.
As i have said before, thank you for all your sterling and very informative work on here. It would be a good idea to link to that picture, actually. It might take a while though, because I don't have a scanner. Maybe someone else will oblige first Just discovered your blog, and it is outstanding.
Erudite, accurate, thorough and lucid. I look forward to reading more. Somehow I failed to mention here that the original mix of Mountains on Aoxomoxoa featured some women singing a choral backing presumably "Wendy and Debbie," listed as supporting musicians in the album credits. They were removed in Garcia's remix, when he simplified the album. He said at the time, "On the record as it is now, I've dropped a lot of the junk off it. It sounds more like what I hoped it would when we recorded it.
Hunter didn't like the line "twenty degrees in all," and later changed it for his own performances. He explained in ' "When I wrote it originally, we were in a pressured recording situation. I knew it was weak, but I just didn't have the time to fix things I wasn't entirely happy with.
Perhaps just as likely, Garcia accepted the first lyrics he was given and was reluctant to change them later. As Hunter said, "He's loath to change something once he feels like it's done, while I'll tinker endlessly with things. The missing bass note must have been "the eleven" I guess. I always heard that the background singers were The Ace of Cups on the original mix of Mountains of the Moon.
I have the original vinyl version of the album and like that mix better. I wish they'd release the original mix on CD. I think a whole Aoxomoxoa Sessions box set should be released. Of course there is the original video of Family Dog , also video of Columbia , more obscure are the short parts of Pigpen Garcia and Hunter which we think are 63 or But the most interesting parts are from a 69 show -- on my copy of 'Backstage Pass' at around and and some very short snippets thereafter: they show Mickey on washboard, Garcia on 3 guitars acoustic, electric and 12 string!
My assumption is, these snippets are Anonymous September 29, at AM. Anonymous September 18, at PM. Acoustic Songs October 15, at PM. Paul Honeycutt September 12, at PM. Newer Post Older Post Home. Subscribe to: Post Comments Atom.

I saw them twice, the most memorable in on tour supporting Wake of the Flood. They were SO tight, engaged, emotional, positive Jerry was nearly lilting and answered any questions about why they were a very popular live band.
Even with personnel changes, they were still on the musical high they discussed at the end of this doc. That was right before hard drugs and booze took the band over for a while, as well as just before Garcia's opiate use began. Lest anyone be in doubt, and lots of bad YT video aside, Garcia was the undoubted leader and main force of the band in their concerts.
So this doc answered a lot of questions about why I have never been able to reconcile the terrible YouTube vids of them most actual videos are from the later 70s and on, though and the band I saw, although their live albums and tons of bootleg recordings from this era also proved their live abilities. I am lucky to have seen them when I did I thought I came to the table late! The band I saw is why they developed such a devoted following for their live shows. Not only did they play more than the standard 90min-2hrs and off; they really seemed to enjoy playing for us, and for themselves, which put them in a league of their own at that time, which this was discussed in this film and not just something I imagined during the concert.
This episode, thankfully, didn't dwell on the Haight and hippies as much as many docs have. The pretension of this series was set to "low" for this episode, thank goodness, unlike many. And even Robert Hunter, their shy lyricist, showed up.
He was such a mystery back in the day that it was wonderful to just put a face to the name. Any info about their songwriting was a treat as that was somewhat of a mystery, too. All we had back then were liner notes and the odd article in Rolling Stone really odd by the early 70s, as they noticed little but the Stones. Anyway, this is a good view, whether you are young or old er , Deadhead or not.
WOW - what a fantastic look back at the making of those two albums! The footage, while grainy at times What do you expect from stuff that's 40 years old?
Not even in the recent "Long, Strange Trip. It's fantastic to have this "portal" into their thoughts on the lyrics and creation of the songs. Highly recommended, and a real bargain for its price! I never understand the reviewers, of whatever band in this series, complaining about them not being a live concert.
It's called the Classic Album series! The difference is, even non-Deadheads and non-freaky counter-culture types can love American Beauty, but Anthem for the Sun I still consider side 1 a masterpiece, even if I don't listen to it that much.
I enjoyed seeing the way the GD member's personalities have changed.

. Aug 18, · Hunter had started writing for the Dead in late '67 (Dark Star, Alligator, China Cat), but Anthem of the Sun turned out to be very much a 'group' album, with contributions from all over the place. But through , Hunter and Garcia kept writing songs together, enough to fill their next (short) album. The remixes of Aoxomoxoa were more drastic than on Anthem. On Aoxomoxoa, "Doin' That Rag" had some different arrangements, "Mountains of the Moon" had the female chorus removed, and "What's Become of the Baby" had all the electronic effects removed, reduced to just an electronically modified voice of Jerry Garcia. Official Site Of The Grateful Dead. (1) Hunter subsequently rewrote this verse, though the Dead never in fact used the new version: Here is a feast of solitude, a fiddler grim and tall Plays to dancing kings and wives assembled in the hall Of lost, long, lonely times fairy Sybil flying All along the, all along the Mountains of the Moon (2) Hunter gives this line as "Lost is a long and lonely. In this edition, rather than examining only one Grateful Dead platter, the impetus behind Anthem to Beauty () is the journey from their highly experimental and exceedingly ambitious amplified efforts Anthem of the Sun () and Aoxomoxoa (), through to the degree stylistic about-face on the acoustic and countrified Workingman's. This program looks at the span of the Grateful Dead's music from 's "Anthem Of The Sun", which was a hybrid of a live and studio album, and the country-styled album "American Beauty". The story is told through new and vintage interviews with band members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Jerry Garcia, and Mickey Hart, guest musicians, and lyricist /5(17).
