Harrison concentrated on his film company HandMade Films, a company started in with the intent of financing Monty Python 's silver-screen debut Life of Brian but gained momentum in the early '80s thanks to the release of 's Bob Hoskins gangster drama The Long Good Friday and Terry Gilliam 's fantasy Time Bandits; the company would also release the acclaimed Mona Lisa and Withnail and Ibefore becoming mired in money problems surrounding the runaway production of the Sean Penn and Madonna vehicle Shanghai Surprise.

A year later, his life was again put on the line when a deranged year-old Beatles fan somehow managed to circumvent Harrison's intricate security system and detail and broke into his home, attacking the musician and his wife, Olivia, with a knife. Harrison was treated for a collapsed lung and minor stab wounds. Olivia suffered several cuts and bruises. In MayHarrison's cancer returned. There was lung surgery, but doctors soon discovered the cancer had spread to his brain.
