Is there any chance of success in finding some good sleepers in this price range? These decks hang toe to toe with the Nakamichis, but don't carry the hefty price tags although they did when they were new.

This may not be the specific deck you want here, but check out this ebay link to The Manor Of Sleep - LB_007 (Cassette) what it looks like. Find a better example of the same model, and you are good to go. With good tapes, set for high biases, it is an excellent recorder. It is front-loading, but its tape actually sits horizontally inside the drive mechanism.

It is not loaded with bells and whistles, but it has a decent amount of user-adjustability for recording purposes. It was made during the same time-frame as the original Nakamichi, and models, did not have the bells and whistles or the stated performance figures of the Nakamichi orbut was more reliable and considerably less expensive Its noise reduction system is the original Dolby system.

I bought one brand-new inand it still performs flawlessly. At the time this deck came on the market, the vast majority of cassette decks were still top-loaders, making this model one of the first front-loaders around then.

I bought it because it was a great deck and the best bang for the buck around at the time. The reviews on it when it was new had high praise for its looks and performance. As with most higher-quality decks of its day, it comes with left and right mic inputs and level controls, a headphone jack, input selector switch, balance control, record level control, recessed front-mounted dolby FM calibrationand two VU meters with peak-check button.

It is NOT an auto-reverse model or a dual tape model. For a look at one, go to current ebay item: These are built like tanks!! Because Technics cassette decks are generally considered mid-fi by most ebayers, and the fact that this particular model is not a dual deck or an auto-reverse deck which actually makes it a better deck!! On eBay, half the battle of getting a really nice item inexpensively lays in the knowledge of the bidders For a best bang for the buck turntable, I like the Technics early version SL The main worry is in shipping.

The platter has to be removed and carefully packed for this. The tonearm and its mechanism also has to be well-secured and protected in shipping. These are sometimes found with blown o-rings on the viscous damping section if the users have neglected to remove the tone-arm clamp prior to using the cuing mechanism very often This problem is normally more commonly associated with ones that have been hauled around by DJ's, though If you can find an Empire Troubadour in great condition for cheap, it is also a great buy!

Making a recommendation for a budget turntable is kinda difficult, since they are generally delicate items and are quite often modified. It depends on the particular item more than it depends on the make and model OF the item, when making the choice. Condition is of paramount importance on these types of "to buy or not to buy" decisions! Although it's not the most important item it's Nak with a "k" as in Nakamichi.

And I have not heard any of the mainstream Japanese tape decks come near the Nakamichi three-head decks in performance. It's not even close in my opinion. Our family has about every Nakamichi imaginable as my father The Manor Of Sleep - LB_007 (Cassette) an avid recording fiend, amassing and cataloging over recordings, each painstakingly recorded on one Nakamichi and then mixed down to the second.

We tried a plethora of other decks and though some were more reliable, none equaled the performance of the better Nakamichis. Revox had a nice deck out The Manor Of Sleep - LB_007 (Cassette) awhile but it is difficult to find now. Believe it or not, Sony's ES series in the late 80s have a stint at a high end deck offering that was nice but still didn't equal the sonics of the better Nakamichis. The main problem with Nak's is the reliability with some of the models.

Models like the Nak BX sounded excellent but developed transport problems. Some of the ZX series were built very well and the professional series of decks were nice. The Nak is an all-time classic and is what got them on the board for amazing sound. At this time, I still have a handful of Nakamichis, some spread to family members.

The CR7a is an excellent deck and is less complex than the Dragon, so far the only Nak deck able to go in both directions. Azimuth and bias calibrations are handled per tape so better match the tape formulation. As for turntables, simple is better in my book. Andy and I have debated the direct drive vs belt drive issue to its death. I think there are quieter and more musical tables around then the Technics SL series.

I tend to be proponent of belt drive with a good bearing, nice method of isolation, and quality tonearm. To me, the source is worth it as the Heritage speakers seem to really abhor weak source components.

The Technics tables are surely not bad tables The Manor Of Sleep - LB_007 (Cassette) say. I can say enough about my Yamaha K cassette deck. It has Nakamichi guts and I've only had it service once in the 15 years I've had it, and that was last year. Another Yamaha piece I'm proud of is my PF turntable. You can still get original belts from Yamaha and it's never needed service. Problem is finding a PF or the even rarer PF with the dust cover intact mine is!! The Technics unit seems so heavy and well-built that I could park my wife's Saturn The Nakamichi decks seem kinda expensive, but I too have heard that the Dragon and CR7A i think that's the name are some of the best-sounding decks out there but you're gonna pay dearly for them - they're expensive and out of my budget.

I did see, however, some Nakamichi Cassette Deck 1s and some Nakamichi CR1As on Ebay that'll come in under my anticipated budget but i know little about their sound and don't know if they're likely to crap out.

I have heard that Nakamichi decks seem to require more maintenance and repairs then other decks. What do you mean when you say it has "nakamichi guts?

Gotta run. I'll be back on later. A quick thanks to all who've commented and shared their knowledge thus far. Now kh knows his Nakamichi decks Those heads were cleaned after each and every recording session, and demagnetized once a week! He sold them years later while I served in the Army; wish I had them!

I babied that deck to no end to the point that I became obsessive with it, afraid it'd wear out prematurely if I used it too much. After spending several hundred in repairs, it never operated quite the same again, so I swapped it in '92 for two brand new Nakamichi 3-head decks, the DR-1 and DR-2!

Not a bad deal! I like the old Technics and Tascam decks sure the classic Dual, Revox, and Tandberg decks are a great buy, toobut a vintage Nakamichi in superb condition would be my pick, but not in your range. I don't know enough about TTs in your price range to make any recommendations, but maybe a year old Music Hall MMF-1 would be right up your alley price-wise. I've got a Nakamichi LX3 that I bought new, that probably has about 30 total hours on it.

You're welcome to it for I remember it as being a very very good 2 head deck, but not in the same league as a Dragon. I don't remember where it lay in the overall scheme of Naks, but mobile is probably familiar with it. It's a great site on virtually every Nakamichi cassette deck made, with a brief description of each model.

It may answer some of your questions. As much as I really don't like mr. Like Kelly, I think Nak's are the best. I know a mastering engineer who swears by Aiwa decks. Just something else for you to consider.

I'm a Nakman myself. But a good Nak Dragon will probably still set you back a grand On turntables Linn if you can afford it.
