They all claim to be remastered in some fashion I have another six or seven to go through Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" is considered one of the greatest operas ever written an opinion, of course, not shared by alland the Met has always had relatively good luck with it, as has other companies throughout the U.
It requires an idiomatic Mozart conductor as well as singers schooled in the Mozart style. This is as an excellent performance, no doubt, but there are other good ones out there also.
Lucine Amara was a fine soprano, but she never attained prima donna status, probably due to the congested numbers of sopranos singing at the Met during this period Milanov, Tebaldi, de los Angeles, Milanov, della Casa, Steber, etcbut she was a highly valued artist who sang many different roles at the Met on the very evenings when the previously named divas were not on the boards.
She sings a beautifully controlled Countess, producing lovely sound and projecting the appropriate inner anguish the Countess feels at the infidelity of her husband. Roberta Peters was another highly attractive artist who sang beautifully at the Met for 35 years. He she is heard in one her best roles as well as one of the most lengthy in opera! Cherubino is not a terribly large role, but she has two arias that are "sure fire" hits, and Mildred Miller, another Met mainstay during the 's, does the trouser role to a turn.
Kim Borg's Count sound a bit gruff, but that is not inappropriate for the role. This recording is now very rare and expensive if you can get itbut Leinsdorf's pacing of the score on that recording is pretty much the same as heard on this Met Sony recording.
At the price, it can hardly be bettered. I must take issue with the previous reviewer who has ruined his own review by making totally inappropriate remarks about the Met under the later musical leadership of James Levine. Levine's abilities have no place in a discussion of this recording, and the vile and vitriolic rantings of the previous reviewer have no place on the these pages.
I cannot understand what would cause any true lover of music to make Philharmonia Orchestra - Opera Overtures (Vinyl a totally classless statement.
For one, Sony is now truthful that this is the first time on CD they've lied in the past. Even more, this is a broadcast from the Met when it really was THE Met before it fell to its current state of mediocrity. Not to belabour the point, all soloists well known are at their prime and this performance is a gem, start to finish. Grab it! See all reviews from the United States.

Throughout all of this incredibly violent and emotionally raw story, the magnificent singing and orchestral support ensure that this Tosca is a Philharmonia Orchestra - Opera Overtures (Vinyl to be listened to, enjoyed, and appreciated for what it truly is- a fabulous recording.
This is one of RCA Victor's Living Stereo recordings, which should immediately tell you that its technical qualities are absolutely first class. In my opinion, Erich Leinsdorf's Tosca is likely to remain among the Philharmonia Orchestra - Opera Overtures (Vinyl classics in the vast discography of Puccini's operas. I hope you will see fit to try this wonderful recording- it's outstanding. Highest recommendations! Review This Title Share on Facebook. Violin Concertos Nos. Teldec Audiophile Pressing Sonata No.

The autocratic, rather scary, Austrian Erich Leinsdorf led the Boston Symphony Orchestra between and , when these recordings were made for RCA, the earliest being the "Eroica". It's an interesting set, particularly from my European perspective, with some excellent performances, but a couple of duds, too/5(29). Ezio Flagello was a colorful and popular American bass from the mid-'50s to , the year of his retirement. His fame owed much, of course, to his many successful performances on the world's operatic stages, but he also appeared on several popular television shows and in the Academy Award-winning film The Godfather Part II playing the Impresario.
