To my ears, it seemed to marry a little of their previous three album's better qualities. Atmosphere, drama I could be talking out of my hole here, but I thought it worth saying. Your comment makes me feel like giving it another go. What do you think of "Chrome"? I've Black Metallic - Catherine Wheel - Black Metallic E.P.
(Vinyl) meaning to post it forever. Voixautre, to be honest, i hated "Chrome" when i first heard it. If I were to pick any favs from "Chrome", it would be Crank which I'm sure would be on the top of most fans list for this albumThe Nude, Strange Fruit and Fripp i love the lyrics of this song.
Of course, when Happy Days came out, it was another blow to the head with the loss of the guitar wash sound i had become so accustomed to.
This album took a lot more getting used to, but the songs stuck around longer in my head. The whole reason "Adam and Eve" became such a favorite for me was because of the maturity of their sound and the 'evolution' of their song structures and atmospheres. They had to make a radio song or two, which i didn't discount, but liked a tad less. If you get a chance, give it another listen, you may find a gem or two to put in constant rotation.
I imagine I'll post the remainder of Catherine Wheel's albums at some point. I was very impressed with their early work. This was predominantly shoegaze, but then they went a bit rock and got a massive following from the US College Radio scene.
This enabled them to outlast most of the early nineties scenesters. The Balloon EP demonstrates that Catherine Wheel had more up their sleeves than the run of the mill indie chart offering. Balloon and Intravenous are vivid well crafted pop songs. Balloon was the first song that made me seek out Catherine Wheel after hearing it on the radio.
Catherine Wheel : Balloon. My favourite Catherine Wheel song ever, and the single has some great b-sides. Ursa Major Space Station appears on here first, before it was later reworked and rereleased on the album Chrome. This is a stripped down original version, it reminds me of Pearl Jam a bit.
The tone becomes even heavier with the dirty metal grunge riff of Collideoscopic. The single ends with Our Friend Joey a thrashy punk stomper that only lasts for a minute and a half. Catherine Wheel had only been formed for two years when I Want to Touch You was released and it shows that Catherine Wheel had severed all links with the shoegazing fraternity and had gone to a rockier shore. Apr 06, · My favourite Catherine Wheel story: MTV minutes showed the video for Black Metallic late one evening and I immediately loved it. First time I heard the band. A couple of days later I went to the nearest town, Lund, for a Smashing Pumpkins concert. And guess who was the support act? Catherine Wheel. What a great surprise. Ferment by Catherine Wheel is one such album. Regarding my own musical motivators, Ferment pressed all the right buttons. Creating harsh, metallic rhythms as a backdrop for dark, depressive lyrics is a winning recipe in my book and Catherine Wheel are certainly adept in this area.
